Meet Getrol Saah and Vivian Saye

Getrol Saah

I am Getrol Saah, born of Kpandiloe Village, Rankollie Clan, Foya Statutory District, Lofa County, Liberia.  I am 19 years of age.

I was told by my mother that when I was a year old, one day my mother took me along to get water at mid-day. As we returned to the town, she said she attempted to take me from her back to nurse me. At that time I was now unconscious. When she took my hands and feet, both were abnormal. This made her to burst into tears. I was taken to the hospital by some community members for a month for treatment. I became conscious again but this time my hands and feet remained abnormal. This resulted in my disabled condition.

Today, I cannot go out, young as I am, and have no education.  Sometimes, I manage to go out through the help of a push in a wheel chair. My father is already dead. Only my mother who is also vulnerable is live. She cannot afford anything on her own and her present condition is deplorable.

Vivian Saye

My name is Vivian S. Saye and I am 18 years old. I was born on Kpormbu Road, Foya Statutory District, Lofa County, Liberia.

My parents told me that I was not born a crippled child. However, they said that when I started walking as a child, there was an old man in our village that was not in favour of my father because he had hatred for my father and this said hatred was turned towards me. As a child I knew nothing but my parents said this old man noticed that I was a beautiful child in my family so he thought if I grew big I will be useful to my family. Therefore, as my parents told me, this old man made me crippled through witchcraft and also made my father to become a mad man causing my father not to take me as a human being. The clear evidence of this is that even if I request anything from him, he cannot listen or respond.

I am also attending school and presently in the 9th grade but I do not have any family people to assist me. Even my school fees I have to go around begging neighbours. No good housing and I even find it difficult to find food to eat. It is only through hard labor I am trying to make it somehow.
